0. phoneArena posted on 31 May 2016, 07:16 It was almost 3 months ago when we got to see the new Xperia X, Xperia X Performance, and Xperia XA, demonstrated at the MWC 2016 mobile superevent. Sony certainly surprised us with a line of devices that is supposed to reboot, refresh, and breathe new life in the Xperia family's looks and feel. A couple of weeks ago, the company also announced the selfie-centric Xperia XA Ultra, with a 16 MP, OIS-assisted front-facing camera, but still with no word on pricing and availability. If there’s one thing for which Sony has become known in the smartphone space, it’s riding the cutting edge of smartphone display tech. It debuted the world’s first 4K-touting phone in 2015, after all — the Xperia Z5 Premium — and rumor has it the company’s prepping a worthy, showstopping successor for release later this year. According to device blog PhoneRadar, the company’s next flagship — the Xperia X Premium — will sport an HDR screen. The report’s a bit light on the details, but Xperia X Premium’s 5.5-inch, 1080p display will allegedly boast a mind-boggling color depth of 1.07 billion colors (or 1,024 shades per color), a vast improvement over the 16.8 million (256 shades per color) of which smartphones on the market are currently capable. At Mobile World Congress 2016, Sony unveiled three new devices in a new Xperia X lineup. None of those phones are available yet, but Sony’s added a fourth to the series — the Xperia XA Ultra.Design-wise, the Xperia XA Ultra is a larger version of the lower-tier Xperia XA. It has ridiculously small bezels, and the same button placement as the rest of the Xperia X series — the power button is on the bottom-right edge, and the volume rocker is on the center-right edge. The Ultra has a curved glass display, which makes it stand out from the rest of the Xperia X series.A 6-inch screen classifies the XA Ultra as a phablet, but even though it’s the largest of the X lineup, the resolution remains the same as the other higher-end models at 1080p.The device is being touted for its selfie-camera capabilities more than anything else — it has a 16-megapixel front-facing camera, and a 21.5-megapixel rear one. The front camera is supported … [Read more...] about Sony’s newest Xperia X member is a phablet with a 16-megapixel selfie camera
For a company that has repeatedly failed to produce a popular smartphone, Sony’s strategy sure is strange. Rather than doubling down on costs and offering a streamlined lineup, the company is continuing to offer more and more varieties along its latest Xperia X line. We currently have the Xperia X, the Xperia XA, Xperia XA Ultra, and Xperia X Performance. There were rumors about an Xperia XZ and an Xperia X Compact, and now, they’ve come true. At least, on the Xperia X Compact front — the phone was officially launched in the United Kingdom on September 8, and in the Unites States. on September 25.Too many devices can certainly confuse consumers, but at least there’s some consistency to the Compact. It follows predecessors such as the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact and the Sony Xperia Z5 Compact. And there’s certainly interest in these smaller devices, especially when most manufacturers only offer devices larger than 5.2 inches. Take a look … [Read more...] about Sony’s Xperia X Compact is official
Sony’s Xperia X Compact inherits many of the XZ’s best characteristics … and its baggage. Sony’s top-of-the-line smartphones have traditionally been accompanied by cheaper, smaller handsets. Historically, it’s a strategy that’s done the firm well: the Xperia Z3 Compact topped the smartphone sales list in Japan, and last year’s effort, the Xperia Z5, left us thoroughly impressed. It’s not really surprising that alongside the flagship Xperia XZ we’re going to get the Xperia X Compact. The Xperia X Compact is mostly in line with its predecessors, which is to say that it retains its pricier sibling’s stylistic highlights while omitting a few top-of-the-line components. In the case of this year’s model, the handset borrows the Xperia XZ’s curved edges, a seamless unibody, and minimalist design, but trades the processor for a weaker processor, … [Read more...] about Hands on: Sony Xperia X Compact
Sony wants to put the “smart” in smartphones with its new Xperia X series handsets, which come packing new “intelligent” predictive features, better battery management, and a greater focus on design. The company introduced the first three phones revolving around that vision—the Xperia X Series featuring the Xperia X, Xperia X Performance, and the Xperia XA—during Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on Monday. Sony says the Xperia X Series is part of the company’s new approach to add “layers of intelligent technology.” What that means in practice: To begin with, the phone's camera will get new predictive capabilities to take better action shots. Once you’ve centered the phone on its subject, the phone’s software kicks in to figure out what the subject will do next and grab a shot that has less blur, according to Sony. The batteries on these phones will also have better management and Qnovo Adaptive Charging … [Read more...] about Sony’s new Xperia X series injects more intelligence into smartphones
