While YouTube is currently the reigning king of online video, fierce competition from longtime rivals like Vimeo and up-and-comers like Vessel ensures that the service can never rest on its laurels for long. Now it appears that YouTube may be considering launching a subscription video-on-demand (VOD) service, according to Variety‘s Todd Spangler.Details are few and far between, as the company hasn’t made an official announcement, but the article mentions that a video subscription service could be modeled on YouTube’s own Music Key, which launched in beta form last year. Music Key offers ad-free access to music videos for an introductory price of $7.99.The similarities to Music Key don’t seem to end there. A YouTube partner was apparently approached by the company last year in regards to a licensing deal for on-demand content, and was warned that if they didn’t agree to the terms, they could be denied future ad revenue. A similar tactic was used … [Read more...] about Here’s what $8 bucks a month could get you on YouTube

During the Consumer Electronics Show at the beginning of 2016, YouTube announced that support for HDR (High Dynamic Range) video would be coming to the platform. As the end of 2016 drew near, it looked like viewers might have to wait until 2017, but that isn’t the case, as YouTube officially launched HDR support on Monday. While 4K might currently be the hot thing in TVs, HDR is quickly on the rise and for good reason. Whereas 4K has simply higher resolution, HDR makes for darker blacks, brighter whites, and deeper color, meaning you don’t need to be eagle-eyed to notice the difference. “Simply put,” the YouTube blog post announcing the new feature reads, “HDR unlocks the most spectacular image quality we’ve ever streamed.”When HDR first launched on YouTube, the only way to watch it on a TV was Google’s Chromecast Ultra, which the company unveiled in October. Samsung was the only other partner mentioned at the time. On Tuesday, Samsung … [Read more...] about Samsung’s 2016 TV lineup joins the Chromecast to support HDR on YouTube
Spotify shelled out a huge sum to promote its services on YouTube in a one-day advertising blitz. But why would Spotify fork over so much dough to another place you can listen to music online?Just to recap: Spotify is a streaming music service, meaning YouTube is a major competitor – even though its focus is videos, people can access almost any song they want by typing it into the YouTube search bar and pressing play. So it’s a little odd to think of Spotify handing over an estimated $400,000 (according to a survey by Digiday) to the larger and more established enemy. But if you take a look at their motivations, it makes perfect sense – because this is a case of David using Goliath’s megaphone to spread a message.Bigger platform, more eyesIt’s unfortunate for Spotify that the only way to leech users from its competitor requires giving them money, but the YouTube homepage buyout provided immense exposure – even though there are 1 million Spotify users … [Read more...] about Why is Spotify paying so much to advertise on YouTube?

Starting at 8 a.m. Pacific Time, Live on YouTube will stream live entertainment programming from four online media partners. No stranger to live video, YouTube has experimented with live streaming over the years on a case-by-case basis. It first tested the live video streaming waters back in 2008 with YouTube Live — “part concert, part variety show, and part party” — and more recently, live broadcast Google’s press conference announcing Google Instant. President Obama answered questions live earlier this year on YouTube, and rock band U2 broadcast a concert last year. What makes this test different is that it may be YouTube’s first indication of a full-fledged live streaming platform, similar to what Ustream and Livestream already offer. For the moment, it’s still an experiment with select partners. There are no indications as to what its … [Read more...] about Live on YouTube brings live video streaming to masses
A new study from Vidmeter.com (PDF) finds that, among nearly 7,000 of YouTube’s most popular videos, fewer than 6 percent were removed due to requests and/or demands from copyright holders. Vidmeter decided to take a look at YouTube’s list of most-watched video clips fourt times per day between December 9, 2006, and March 22, 2007, pulling down YouTube’s own lists of the most-watched videos by day, week, month, and all-time. Vidmeter then pulled info for each video four to eight times a day, including the total number of plays, its name, and copyright information. When YouTube removed a video at the request of a copyright holder, the site replaces the video with a message but takes down the total number of plays the video received prior to removal; in those cases, Vidmeter would use the most-recently retrieved play count in its statistics. The results? “We have concluded that unauthorized copyright videos make up a relatively small portion of … [Read more...] about Infringing Videos Not Big on YouTube?
