It’s difficult to remember now, but there was a moment in early 2016 when many in the tech industry believed chatbots—automated text-based virtual assistants—would be the next big platform. Messaging app Kik staked its company’s future on bots and “chatvertising.” Startup studio Betaworks launched an accelerator program called Botcamp. And at its 2016 F8 conference, Facebook pitched bots to developers as the best way to connect with 900 million Messenger users. Few expected that voice assistants like Amazon's Alexa and Google Assistant would thrive and text-based chatbots would become a punchline. Betaworks’ accelerator lasted one class. Kik pivoted to blockchain technology. And now Facebook says it will shutter M, its buzzy full-service virtual assistant, on Jan. 19. In some respects it’s impressive that Facebook kept M running as long as it did. Despite the hype, M, which lived in Facebook Messenger, was presented as an experiment. The … [Read more...] about Facebook’s Virtual Assistant M Is Dead. So Are Chatbots

Facebook has a virtual assistant called “M” you probably didn’t know existed. The company announced today it will be shutting M down in a little over a week. This is curious timing, as CES 2018 is about to start and virtual assistants are the hot topic. If you’ve used Facebook Messenger over the past few months, you may have noticed little suggestions popping up during your conversations. Maybe you used the phrase “what time” in a message, and a notification popped up giving you the option to “Start Plan.” Clicking that would get a schedule going for a private event between you and the participants in the message. This was the work of Facebook’s virtual assistant, “M.” First announced in 2015 with the codename “Moneypenny,” Facebook claimed complex AI and human interaction were going to fuel M’s advancement. Eventually it would be able compete with Google’s Assistant, Apple’s Siri, and … [Read more...] about Say goodbye to M, Facebook’s virtual assistant
Its been reported elsewhere that pirates have already cracked into the Windows 7 RC and are setting up botnets using it. Probably something they practiced on with a Vista shrink-wrap disk. Here is where Microsoft screwed up big time. The install routine could be set to do some sort of MD5 or better file checksum test and validation. Force the install routine to access a Microsoft server that does some sort of encrypted transaction with the install software BEFORE the software can be installed. The image needs to be fully encrypted and unlockable only when it calls home to the MS mothership and is validated. They OWN 90% of the entire world's computer desktops. In other words, if you're going to "protect" your IP, start at the freaking beginning Microsoft! Its time they started acting like the responsible adults/citizens/corporate entities they say they are. They had an opportunity to at least slow down bot-nets and other Internet trash and they pissed it away. Microsoft needs to … [Read more...] about Pirates on Board the M.S. MoneyTanker!

If the recent release of the unusual ZTE Axon M has you curious, now may be the best time to get the phone.Best Buy is currently selling the device for $17.49 a month for 30 months instead of the usual $24.17 per month, when you buy through AT&T Next (the phone is an AT&T exclusive in the US). That totals about $525, which is a $200 discount off of the normal $725 retail price. While other premium phones like the iPhone X and Galaxy Note 8 boast a slim design with an edge-to-edge display, the ZTE Axon M does things a little differently. It features two 5.2-inch screens that can be opened up like a book and viewed side by side. But this is more than just a folding phablet. ZTE makes the most out of the Axon M's two screens by allowing different multitasking, full-screen and mirroring modes. CNET's editors have compared it to a Nintendo 3DS, but one thing's for sure, it's not like any other phone on the market. Some of the Axon M's specs include: Two 5.2-inch screens with … [Read more...] about The ZTE Axon M is $200 less at Best Buy
ZTE has finally unveiled the long-rumored ZTE Axon M, its new foldable phone that doubles the screen real-estate by adding a second display that folds in. The result? A phone that’s pretty different from devices we’ve seen in the past.Last year’s Axon 7 smartphone is more like a traditional phone, but it was very well-received — we gave it an 8 out of 10 in our review. Despite being a year older, the Axon M still might have a hard time beating it out because it does not feature the flagship specs you see in most 2017 phones. So how do the phones compare? We put them head to head to find out.The ZTE Axon 7 launched last year with top notch specs, and it still manages to do well against the Axon M. Despite the high price tag, the Axon M is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 821 processor, which is marginally better than the Axon 7’s Snapdragon 820. Both the Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 and Snapdragon 820 are excellent processors, but they have been surpassed … [Read more...] about ZTE Axon M vs ZTE Axon 7: Can ZTE’s foldable phone beat its mid-range classic?
Intel Core’s M is a puzzling processor. It’s based off the same Broadwell architecture as the mainstream Core i3, i5, and i7 chips, yet it has distinctly different specifications and targets much smaller, slimmer computers. It was the first chip of the fifth generation Core line-up to arrive, yet it’s found in far fewer notebooks than the mainstream 5th-generation Core hardware released at the start of the year. And benchmarks have found its performance can vary so significantly that a Core M’s quoted clock speed is not always an indicator of real-world speed. And there’s another riddle. The Core M chips are supposed to draw little power, which in turn should mean excellent battery life. Yet all our best endurance scores in 2015 thus far belong to laptops with standard Core i5 or i7 chip. The victories have not been small, either; the best standard Core system lasts three hours longer than the best with Core M inside. Why is this … [Read more...] about Why don’t laptops with Intel’s Core M processors run longer? Update 3/9/2015 11:10AM: According to information released by Apple it appears the Core M-5Y70 tested here is the chip that’s powering the base model of the new MacBook. Update 12/24/2014 9:28AM: The conclusion of this article has been changed to reflect more recent information about Intel’s remaining Broadwell product lineup. At IFA 2014, Intel gave us the full skinny on its fifth-generation Broadwell-based Intel Core M CPUs. The chips would be thinner, and more energy-efficient than past CPUs, while also offering solid performance. They would pave the way for slimmer, lighter devices than anything we’ve ever seen before. If our time with the Core M-powered Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro is any indication, that latter bit is true. But what about the energy efficiency and performance aspects? Does Core M measure up, or does it come up short? We got to thoroughly test out the Core M, so now we can answer those questions in full. Here’s what we learned. But first, … [Read more...] about [Updated] Intel’s Core M powers the MacBook
