U.S. consumers know that their personal data is valuable to companies, and they're not afraid to share as long as they receive something in the exchange and the information isn't too personal, according to a new study by PwC."People are willing to share personal information if they get benefit from it," says Mark Lobel, principal with PwC Advisory Services.PwC reports that it used a two-phase program to capture the data. It started with a survey of 1,000 U.S. participants and then went into more depth with a series of follow-up focus groups.PwC found that 73 percent of respondents were willing to share their information depending on what they would receive in return, and the number increased to 76 percent when offered free benefits, like free entertainment and media services. But consumers become increasingly more tight-fisted with information the more personal it gets.Between 81 percent and 93 percent of participants were highly willing to share information about their gender and … [Read more...] about How Businesses Can Get Consumers to Share Their Data
Microsoft Exchange Server to a cloud-computing-based solution like Google Mail. However, many users will continue to prefer to use Microsoft Outlook as their email client and not the Web-based interface common to Gmail users. (I am squarely in that camp.)Those users can continue to use Outlook as their email client if they set up their enterprise Gmail email account using Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP). Having recently done this myself, I can tell you there are more than a few tricky spots to navigate through during setup. Here are the steps I used to make it work for me. Reader Harold and his wife, Ginnie, were puzzled about setting up Mail in macOS to use their business’s return email address when they replied from an iCloud account. Harold notes, “I hate the thought that I will have to type it in every time but I can’t seem to figure out how to do this.”It’s a feature, but it’s not obvious in the least. When you set up an account in Mail, or it’s synced from iOS, Mail prefills a lot of values. This includes the Email Address field you find in Preferences > Accounts in the Account Information tab. For our Mac 911 account, for example, it prefills the email address that’s used to login to the service at which this mail is hosted. But note that it’s a pop-up menu. Click it, and you can choose Edit Email Addresses. This lists all return addresses associated with the account. For my iCloud account, I have my account name for @icloud.com, but also the old @me.com and @mac.com—sometimes I have to … [Read more...] about How to set a different return address in Mail for macOS
iTunes is great at storing all your music and other media, but only if you let it. If, like one correspondent, you have a number of hard drives with old iTunes Media folders, you need to do some work to consolidate them. In other news, iTunes has changed the way you delete files from your library, but not from the cloud. And if iTunes displays a “session expired” dialog, here’s how to fix it. Combining old music folders in one iTunes library Q: I have multiple iTunes Music folders from different old hard drives that were dying, and they all now reside on an external HD. One of them is in my iTunes Media folder, others are named Music 2, 3, etc. I am struggling to find an efficient way to consolidate all the music into the iTunes Media folder. Currently I have to open two Finder windows highlighting two different Music folders to manually compare contents, select the correct content and then drag it into the correct folder; then delete the artist and album from Music … [Read more...] about Ask the iTunes Guy: Consolidating iTunes libraries, deleting songs, correcting an email address for an iTunes account
Think of all the places where your old email address resides, outside of your immediate control, waiting to give people plenty of false information. There are other people’s address books, old messages in people’s inboxes, websites that use your address as your logon name, and your business cards.Changing your email address can be quite a chore.1. Keep the old address for a little whileThe first thing you need to do is check with your old mail provider and find out how long you can keep the old address and at what price. It’s probably worth the money to keep it for at least a few months.2. Tell your contacts, but bcc: pleaseThen you need to tell everyone about the change. Using your new address, send an email to everyone in your address book—friends, relatives, and business associates. Address the message to yourself (again, with the new address), and BCC everyone else. The BCC part is important. Providing everyone with everyone else’s email address is … [Read more...] about How to change your email address without losing your friends
How do you know if an email address exists or not? The easy option would be that you send a dummy mail to that email address, wait for an hour or so and if your message bounces, it is very likely that the particular email address does not exist. The approach works but wouldn’t it be nice if you could check any email address instantly without even sending that test message? The other slightly technical option to verify an email address is by querying the mail server. You connect to the mail server through telnet (see video), enter your email address and the other email address that you are trying to verify. If the server response is an error code, the email address is probably not valid.Let me share an extremely simple method for checking if an email address is valid and exists or not.Go to the login page of the email service and pretend that you no longer remember the password of your email account. The service will ask for your email address where they can send the password … [Read more...] about How to Check if an Email Address is Valid and Exists
