What's the hardest thing a Star Wars actor must endure? Is it the pressure of starring in the highest-grossing film series of all time? Is it all that grueling stuntwork? Nope. It's getting through a scene without making the noises "pew pew!" (if you're handling a blaster) or "zhhjummmm!" (when wielding a lightsaber). SEE ALSO: Luke Skywalker's darker journey in 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' was just good storytelling The Last Jedi star Laura "Vice Admiral Holdo" Dern is the latest venerable actor to fall victim to this trend, director Rian Johnson revealed on the film's commentary track, which arrived as part of the movie's digital release Tuesday. "You can see Laura Dern say 'pew' when she fires the gun, which she could never not do every time she shot it," says Johnson. Dern is far from the only Star Wars actor who made their own noises when acting in the scenes. When Ewan McGregor was cast as Obi-Wan Kenobi in The Phantom Menace, he found himself unable to stop mimicking the … [Read more...] about ‘Last Jedi’ star Laura Dern loves to pew, pew, too

Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens hits theaters a month from today, so it’s no surprise that the Honest Trailers crew have finally decided to turn their attention to the movie that started it all: George Lucas’ 1977 masterpiece, Star Wars. From Luke Skywalker’s whiny attitude to the title change and “special edition” edits, this installment of the hit video series doesn’t pull any punches when it comes to the sci-fi classic.Refusing to call the movie by its officially changed title, Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, the video goes on to offer a pretty spot-on critique of the film and provide a preview that’s more in line with what you’d really see if you watched the 1977 film today. While hardcore fans might be horrified by some of the insults tossed at Lucas’ genre-defining movie, it’s difficult not to find some truth in some of the assessments of Star Wars.Juxtaposing scenes of Mark … [Read more...] about What happens when Star Wars gets the Honest Trailers treatment?
The billion-dollar behemoth that is the reborn Lucasfilm under Disney is letting no grass grow as it swiftly develops a new trilogy of Star Wars movies. While Michael Arndt (Toy Story 3) was hired to write Star Wars Episode VII for release in 2015, Deadline reports that Lucasfilm and Disney have already hired writers to write scripts for Episode VIII and IX as well as produce those films. The first of these writers is Simon Kinberg. Kinberg’s work as a screen writer won’t necessarily fill fans with confidence, as his resume ranges between tolerable but unexceptional films like Sherlock Holmes and Mr. & Mrs. Smith to outright stinkers like XXX: State of the Union and the Hayden Christensen vehicle Jumper. The second hire is more promising. Lawrence Kasdan. Over the past thirty years, Kasdan has also written his fair share of duds, including the abysmal Stephen King adaptation Dreamcatcher and The Bodyguard. Three of the very first screenplays Kasdan ever wrote, though, … [Read more...] about Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back writer hired to pen Episode VIII and IX
With a new movie scheduled for release in December, Star Wars is getting lots of media attention these days. And Disney, the company that now owns the Star Wars franchise, finally decided to release the first six Star Wars movies on iTunes. While some Star Wars fans might be excited about this, you won't find me buying the Star Wars movies on iTunes anytime soon. Here are five reasons why I'm going to take a pass on buying the Star Wars movies from the iTune store: 1. The iTunes versions aren't the original versions of the Star Wars moviesOne of the most disappointing things about the Star Wars films that are available in iTunes is that they aren't the original versions of the movies. Instead they are the "revised" versions done by George Lucas that have significant alterations that were not in the original versions of the films.Yes, some of the special effects are better and I can understand why some people might enjoy that part of the downloadable versions of the films. But special … [Read more...] about iTunes and Star Wars: Thanks but no thanks, Disney!

A long time ago, in a Geekend far, far away — 2006 — we polled our (then quite small) audience about their favorite science fiction and fantasy media franchises. It's time to settle this debate once and for...uh...now.First, some ground rules. To be a true franchise, you have to A) merit a spinoff and B) have an acknowledged interrelated continuity. I like Blake's 7, Fringe, Spider-Man, and James Bond as much as the next guy, but all of those properties are either alone in their singular incarnation, or are so diverse in their reincarnations there's nothing remotely approaching a central, acknowledged canon. Harry Potter, True Blood, Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, Twilight (shudder), and The Hunger Games may get there, but they aren't iconic franchises yet.And now, the list...10. Babylon 5Its spinoff series, Crusade, may have been smothered in the crib and its made-for-TV spinoff movies may be largely forgotten, but B5 still hangs around with a loyal group of … [Read more...] about The top 10 geek media franchises of all time
